The Body
This section concerns the potentials and limitations of the physical body. The techniques of Kempo exploit
both and challenge you to expand your understanding of each. Physical Conditioning will teach you how your
muscles work and grow, while Biomechanics discusses joints and motion.
As a board-certified physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and author of
The Stroke Recovery Book, I have prescribed
numerious exercise programs for both disabled and healthy people.
It only seemed fitting that I participate in exercise myself. When I began looking at martial arts schools,
I had many criteria that needed to be met: stretching, strengthening, coordination, balance, effectiveness
of techniques, self-defense orientation, a component of meditation, safety and most importantly a
commitment to excellence by qualified instructors. My search ended when I discovered Christopher N.
Geary's Shaolin Kempo Karate, where my criteria were met and exceeded.
The instructors are "hands-on" people, constantly out on the floor giving each student individual
attention during each session. I have been so impressed with the teaching that I have my 13 year-old
son attending classes with me. He is at that critical time of character development and the
instruction he has received will help his development into a superior young man.
